Chapter Twelve â Monday afternoon
The following morning, I was up bright and early. Well, in time for the start of the breakfast session at 11am. Unusually, it was Grandma who was struggling to wake up. She told me that she had slept badly and so would skip breakfast. Obviously, I wasnât going to stay and keep her company â not when there was food involved. Plus, being so early, I thought I might get a few minutes alone with Matt. He was always an early riser.
The breakfast room was busy when I arrived, but sadly there was no sign of Matt. Jack was sitting at a table with Cassie and Rachel, so I made my way over.
âNo Matt this morning?â I tried to keep my voice casual as I took the seat opposite Rachel.
âHeâs out on an errand,â said Jack, pouring some coffee for me.
âItâs a secret,â said Rachel with a smile. âJack knows, but heâs being all mysterious.â
âHe wonât even tell me!â said Cassie, although her smile belied the frustration of her words.
I took my first sip of coffee and sighed. A good nightâs sleep, a hot cup of coffee and happy table-mates. Not a bad start to the day. I ordered medialunas when Sofia came round, and my first bite of the light, flaky pastry made my day even brighter.
âWhoâs taking the class today, do we know?â I asked. Jack would know.
âPablo and Natalia,â he said.
âShe promised to be hard on us, remember?â asked Rachel. I turned to look at her. She seemed much happier than when Iâd last seen her â just before she refused point blank to go to a haunted milonga.
âAnd where are we dancing tonight?â I decided to test the waters.
âI canât remember the name â something long and complicated â but itâs a very small place just around the corner from here.â Jack didnât disappoint me.
âAnd are you coming to that one Rachel?â
âOh yes,â she said. âWhen nothing happened on Saturday night, I realised Iâd been a bit foolish.â
My eyes flicked to Jack who was staring at me with a rictus grin, medialuna raised halfway to his mouth and shaking slightly under the strain.
âOh yes,â I said, turning towards Cassie. She was also smiling broadly, although her smile seemed marginally more natural. âThat was quite a relief to everyone I think.â
There was an almost audible sigh from the table, but Rachel seemed not to notice. We ate in silence for a while and then Rachel announced that she needed to get ready for class. As she was dressed in sweats and a t-shirt with perfect (to my eye) hair and make-up, I couldnât think what she needed to do. But I didnât question her â I was too keen to grill Jack and Cassie.
âWhat were you thinking?â I hissed as door swung closed behind her. âSheâs bound to hear sooner or later and then sheâll know you lied to her.â
âWe lied to her,â said Jack, with a grin. I scowled at him. His boyish charm never worked on me.
